Everything you need to to prepare, pack and host the perfect picnic.

The temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer, which can only mean one thing – picnic season has officially begun! In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to prepare, pack and host the perfect picnic.

What is a picnic?

A picnic involves enjoying pre-prepared food outside, typically on a rug or blanket. Whether your ideal picnic spot is a sandy beach, an idyllic park or a shaded forest, read on to discover everything you need to prepare, pack and host the ultimate picnic.

Where did the term picnic come from?

The term “picnic” comes from the French term “pique-nique,” which emerged in the 17th century. It originally referred to a social gathering where each guest brought a share of the food for the meal ahead.

Plan ahead

The perfect picnic is all in the preparation, so take some time to think everything through. Firstly, what type of picnic are you planning? A romantic picnic for two will require different prep than a family gathering, so, make a list of everything you need. Avoid stress on the day by preparing as much of the food as you can in advance. That way, you’re only adding finishing touches like salad dressings and seasonings once you arrive at your chosen picnic spot.

What to take on a picnic

Picnic basket or cool box, which should you choose? It’s entirely up to you and totally depends on the vibe. If you’re going for old school picnic charm and don’t have far to travel, a wicker basket certainly fits the bill. But if there’s a lot of you and it’s set to be a scorcher, you’re better off using a cool bag packed with ice blocks to keep the food fresh for longer.

Picnic essentials

Screenshot this list so you don’t forget anything!

  • Picnic rug or camping chairs
  • Plates, cups, forks, serving spoons and knives (reusable tableware is a worthwhile investment and can be used all summer long and year after year)
  • Cloth or recycled napkins
  • A corkscrew and bottle opener
  • Insect repellent or citronella tea lights – you don’t want bugs ruining your picnic
  • Bring sealed containers to avoid pests
  • Baby wipes
  • Bin bags – if you’re in a secluded area or think there won’t be bins near your picnic spot, make sure you tidy up after yourselves
  • Hot day? Bring a portable fan to keep cool
  • Portable speaker – so long as you aren’t disturbing other people you can set the scene with some upbeat music

Picnic tips

  • Thermos flasks or insulated food jars are ideal for keeping soups, stews, pasta or curries warm.
  • Wrap hot food tightly in aluminium foil, then cover in a thick towel or blanket to trap the heat.
  • When finding your spot, look for somewhere with shade – nobody wants to come home with sunburn!
  • Got guests with allergies? Make sure they know which foods to avoid (labelling any containers really helps!)
  • Avoid accidents by bringing plastic or paper cups instead of glass.
  • Use frozen bottles of water or squash as ice packs. They’ll keep food cool and slowly defrost for drinking later.
  • If your picnic might stretch into the evening, solar or battery-powered lights are great for adding atmosphere.
  • Why not take it back to the school days with a few games or rounders or frisbee before the picnic? Keeps kids (and big kids) entertained all afternoon!
