With schools re-opening their doors on the 8th March there has never been a more important time to ensure that hot, nutritious lunches are brought back to school menus.
That’s why we at Tilda are lending our support to LACA UK in encouraging the school meals sector – from LEAs, MATs, Contract Caterers, School Catering Managers, wholesalers and suppliers – to rally together to get hot meals back on menus and provide schoolchildren with the nutrition they need.
With everything that has happened over this past year, school caterers have been more than amazing and we have helped where we can with our Tilda Toolkit, which offers hints and tips to help caterers adapt in these challenging times.
With social distancing in place, many schools opted for cold lunches when they were open to ease the complex logistics of feeding pupils during their lunch break – a solution that worked well during the summer months. However, with the colder months still fully in force, LACA is encouraging caterers to bring back hot meals in whatever way they can, whether that’s traditional tray service, or grab and go options.
As we all know, there is nothing like a hot meal to keep you going on a cold day and not only are hot meals easily digestible – which helps a child’s concentration – but research shows warm food can help restore energy lost throughout the day*. Not forgetting that for many, the sad fact is that the hot meal they receive at school is often the only one they will get.
To help support LACA’s message and inspire school caterers we’ve teamed up with last year’s winner of the Public Sector Catering Awards, Chef of the Year (as well as LACA School Chef of the Year 2019 National Finalist and EDUCatering Excellence Winner 2018), Steven Cross of Park Community School to create some exciting new recipes your pupils are sure to love.
We’ve also teamed up with HC3S to create this delicious vegetable and bean burrito (with homemade tomato sauce). A quick, easy and safe addition to menus, with no cutlery required, adhering to government guidelines around reducing points of contact.
