Where rice has been grown, harvested and enjoyed for thousands of years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice slowly made its way westward during the 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, brought through Europe from North Africa by the Moors, into the likes of Spain and Portugal. And in all of these countries, variations of rice pudding appear throughout history, topped with spices, nuts or fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice pudding isn\u2019t thought to have made its way to English shores until the 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. A recipe for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potted rice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appears in one of the UK\u2019s oldest cookbooks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Forme of Cury<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">method of cooking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s said to have been authored by Master Cooks to King Richard II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a long time, rice pudding was only enjoyed by the aristocracy. Rice was expensive and considered a luxurious import from the East. It wasn\u2019t until the beginning of the 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century that ingredients started to become more affordable, making rice accessible to the working class. By the 1920s, it was being served to Victorian schoolchildren as a low-cost, nutritional breakfast \u2013 and it\u2019s not changed much since then.<\/span><\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"content-section content-section--top-mask content-section--turquoise\">\n        \n    <div class=\"image-with-text container container--small\">\n                    <div class=\"image-with-text__content\">\n                <h3><b>Slow cooker rice pudding recipe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creamy rice pudding can be flavoured and sweetened with sugars and vanilla extract and dusted with the likes of ground cinnamon or nutmeg. And if you\u2019d like to chuck in some dried fruits, like currants, you\u2019ll give the whole dish a new tasty texture. Why not add a lump of jam, or some maple syrup? Decisions, decisions\u2026 the choice is all yours.<\/span><\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n        \n                            \n                    <div class=\"image-with-text__image\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\"  src=\"\" width=\"\" height=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>            <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"content-section content-section--top-mask content-section-- u-contrast-text--\">\n    <div class=\"free-content container container--small\">\n                    <div class=\"free-content__content user-content\">\n                <h3><b>Ingredients (serves four)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knob of butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">140g short-grain rice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600ml pints of milk (alternatives, like almond milk will work, too)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">600ml double cream<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50g sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1tsp vanilla extract<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground cinnamon or nutmeg for dusting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A handful of dried fruits (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jam, compote or maple syrup to serve (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Steps for making rice pudding in a slow cooker<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rinse your rice thoroughly with cold water and drain well<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grease the inside of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tilda.com\/blog\/equipment-guide\/your-ultimate-guide-to-slow-cookers\/\">slow cooker<\/a> with the butter, and chuck in the rice, milk, sugar, vanilla, cream and mix everything together with a wooden spoon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pop the lid on and cook on high for 30 minutes, and then give everything a good stir<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recover and cook for three hours, stirring occasionally<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn the slow cooker off, stir in your dried fruits (if you\u2019re using any) and let everything cool down before dishing it out<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you serve your rice pudding is up to you. Parchment paper is particularly helpful if you\u2019re using your slow cooker to bake something like a cake. It will prevent the dough from sticking, and it\u2019ll make it much easier to lift the whole thing out in one go. However, for most slow cooker recipes, you don\u2019t have to line the ceramic dish with anything, as it\u2019s designed to be non-stick.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Can you reheat food in a slow cooker?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve got leftovers in the freezer to use up \u2013 like a stew, a curry, or a chilli con carne \u2013 you can reheat them in the slow cooker. As the slow cooker gently heats its contents, it\u2019s great for warming up leftovers. Once your dish begins to defrost, give it a stir so everything warms through evenly, and it\u2019ll gradually simmer back to life. Rice pudding works best in an air fryer when you are able to set it to a pressure cooker setting. Similar to the slow cooker method, wash your rice, place all your ingredients inside the air fryer and allow to cook for up to 25 mins.
