Frequently Asked Questions
Choose from the most commonly asked questions listed below. If you have a question which isn’t answered here, please get in touch with us.
Q.1 What does easy cook mean?
People often believe that easy cook means that it takes less time to cook when in fact it takes longer than non-easy cook rice – this is no bad thing!
Parboiled rice (otherwise known as easy cook rice) is, as it suggests, parboiled at source with the husk on, resulting in the grain appearing slightly off white in colour until it is cooked where upon it turns white. This process guarantees separate grains of rice that are fluffy and remain so when holding, which is ideal for the Foodservice industry.

Basmati is an extremely versatile rice with its qualities lending itself to most dishes, from pilau, paella, and jambalaya to egg fried rice – just to mention a few.

Q.3 What’s the best way to store rice?

Q.4 Is rice gluten-free?
Rice is a perfect gluten-free option on any menu and is ideal served not only in a main, but also as a side dish or dessert. Check out our great selection of gluten free recipes here.
Q.5 Are there any food safety guidelines that should be followed with rice?
Yes and we would strongly advise that you are aware of rice food safety guidelines. Click here to read ‘The Tilda Guide to Rice Health and Hygiene’ and ‘The 10 Commandments of Safe Rice Handling’ to discover all you need to know.
Q.6 What would you add to a vegetarian curry?
Vegetarian food is often regarded as bland and unappealing – it doesn’t have to be this way! Vegetables that work particularly well in curries are potatoes, mushrooms, onions, peppers, carrots, baby sweetcorn, aubergine, courgette, cauliflower, spinach and for a change, sweet potato. Why not also add canned beans, such as chickpeas or kidney beans to give your curries different textures and flavours.

Q.7 I am hosting a curry night, which curries do you suggest I make?
We would suggest having 3 different curries on offer, one mild, medium, and one slightly spicier (for the more adventurous)! Perhaps try a chicken korma, vegetable balti and lamb jalfrezi. Be sure to serve them all with Tilda Easy Cook Basmati Rice for perfect, stress-free rice everytime!
